Year 5 / Blwyddyn 5 2019 - 2020
Welcome to Year 5. Croeso i Ddosbarth 5!
Mrs Payne welcomes you to year 5’s class page. Here you will find useful information about Year Five, including our current topics and recent news. Our teaching assistant in year five is Mrs Reynolds. Should you wish to discuss any aspect of your child’s development, please do not hesitate to arrange a meeting with Mrs Payne via the school office.
In Year 5, your child will continue to learn the Key Stage 2 curriculum. Compulsory national curriculum subjects at primary school include English, Maths, Science, Design and Technology, History, Geography, Art and Design, Music, PE, Swimming, ICT and Welsh.
Ysgol Derwen is moving towards implementing the new curriculum, which becomes statutory in 2022. The curriculum will become more child led with children taking more responsibility for their own learning.

All junior classes have now adopted a new style of homework following a successful trial during the summer term (Please see separate letter for more details). The new homework will be sent home on Friday and the children will have a range of homework tasks to choose from. We expect a minimum of 6 to be completed over the half term. This may be done on a weekly basis as they did previously or if you have a busy weekend and are short of time they can double up the following week. Due to the varied nature of the homework tasks children will no longer have a homework book. Homework is to be brought to school in their popper wallet.

Summer Term 2020
What a different term this is going to be. I hope you are all well and coping with the distance learning tasks. Remember they are just suggestions and there is no pressure for you to complete them all. Just do what you can and try your best. You can access this work either here, on the school website under the 'distance learning tab' or on Google Classroom. It is up to you how you do the work.
It is really important that we all look after our mental health and wellbeing during these times and take time to enjoy the outdoors safely and get our daily exercise as recommended by the Government. We are lucky the weather has been lovely lately. We can all practice our mindfulness techniques that we have learnt in school too.
Our topic this half term is Europe. I have added the new homework grid with some suggetsions of activities for you to complete at home. I will also be adding topic tasks to the weekly planning for you to try.
The newsletter for the Summer term has been added. There is a link to a spreadsheet with over 50 suggested websites that can support home learning. I hope you find this useful.
Stay safe Year 5
