Year 6 / Blwyddyn 6 2019 - 2020
Welcome to Year 6. Croeso i Ddosbarth 6!
Mrs King welcomes you to year 6’s class page. Here you will find useful information about Year Six, including our current topics and recent news. Our teaching assistant in year six is Mrs Reynolds. Should you wish to discuss any aspect of your child’s development, please do not hesitate to arrange a meeting with Mrs King via the school office.
In Year 6, your child will continue to learn the Key Stage 2 curriculum. Compulsory national curriculum subjects at primary school include English, Maths, Science, Design and Technology, History, Geography, Art and Design, Music, PE, Swimming, ICT and Welsh.
Ysgol Derwen is moving towards implementing the new curriculum, which becomes statutory in 2022. The curriculum will become more child led with children taking more responsibility for their own learning.
Autumn Term topic in Year Six:
Mae hen wlad fy Nhadau (Geography)
All junior classes have now adopted a new style of homework following a successful trial during the summer term (Please see separate letter for more details). The new homework will be sent home on Friday and the children will have a range of homework tasks to choose from. We expect a minimum of 6 to be completed over the half term. This may be done on a weekly basis as they did previously or if you have a busy weekend and are short of time they can double up the following week. Due to the varied nature of the homework tasks children will no longer have a homework book. Homework is to be brought to school in their popper wallet.
Spring Term 2020
Our topic this term is World War II.
We have a school trip on Thursday 9th January 2020 to Stockport Air Raid Shelters. This is a role play day where we become evacuees for the day.
You can download the new homework grid on the website.
Friday 14th February, 2020
Wishing you all a very restful half term. This half term has been super. We are all really enjoying our World War II topic and we will continue with this after half term. We will be looking at the Holocaust in detail, Anne Frank and the the battlesfields of the war.
PE - Thank you Mrs Green for coming in to do hockey with Year 6. The children have loved it. I'm sure we will stand a good chance in the hockey festival in April.
After half term in maths we will be looking at probability, symmetry and shape and in English we are looking at diary writing and we will be doing some debate work.
World Book Day 5th March 2020
We are having a fantastic day celebrating books. We have all chosen an activity based on our favourite book. This afternoon we are going to go to a Foundation Phase classto share our favourite stories with them.
Summer Term 2020
What a different term this is going to be. I hope you are all well and coping with the distance learning tasks. Remember they are just suggestions and there is no pressure for you to complete them all. Just do what you can and try your best. You can access this work either here, on the school website under the 'distance learning tab' or on Google Classroom. It is up to you how you do the work.
It is really important that we all look after our mental health and wellbeing during these times and take time to enjoy the outdoors safely and get our daily exercise as recommended by the Government. We are lucky the weather is so good at the minute. We can all practice our mindfulness techniques that we have learnt in school too. I am enjoying colouring with my daughter, enjoying the spring wildlife and spending time in my garden with my lovely dog Molly. I have seen so many birds and animals out and about in my local area. I am also enjoying learning about the different flowers and trees which are sprouting everywhere. Reading ... how could I forget this. I love reading and have ordered quite a lot of books of the internet to keep me occupied.
Our topic this term is Un byd, Ein Byd (One world, Our world). This is an environmental topic about our planet. I will be planning some distance learning activities to help us think about how we can help protect our precious planet and learn what the biggest problems we face are.
Please see the summer term newsletter below.
Stay safe Year 6.
